G-SMART: ADR – Aeroporti di Roma chooses our system for IoT monitoring and benchmarking of trolley collection areas.

An IoT infrastructure for the active and continuous monitoring of the trolley collection areas at Fiumicino International Airport.

G-SMART is the GSE tracking system that combines different technologies (RFID, Bluetooth, ADS-B, GPS) to create the best performing solution depending on the application scenario.

IPS – indoor positioning systems – are systems that allow objects to be detected inside buildings where satellite navigation does not work very well/is not necessary; they work with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standards, as well as passive RFID technologies.

These systems are based on beacon or tag installed directly on the assets to be tracked; specific readers receive signals from these devices and send them to the server which processes the data obtained and makes it immediately available to the user, including information on the position of the object.

For the ADR project the system will use RFID technology for the identification and counting of baggage trolleys at the storage stations (bays) in Terminals T1 and T3 of Fiumicino International Airport, with the aim of reducing operational inefficiencies and to avoid inconveniences to the passenger relating to the search for a trolley to transport luggage.

RFID technology allows to monitor a large number of assets simultaneously and create a simple but efficient system with a reduced need for maintenance.

For the Rome Fiumicino airport we will create an IoT infrastructure made up of more than 5000 RFID tags applied directly to the trolleys (adequately mounted to avoid signal interference due to ferrous material), and an appropriate number of readers and antennas.

The data is shown in real time on a georeferenced map while a special Warning system sends alerts to operators if the number of trolleys in the bay reaches the minimum thresholds set; for each alert, a short video will be recorded from the streaming of the cameras which will then be associated with the warning notification.

The web-based software will also allow you to view and export the history of trolley movements between areas (this indicator generates the right KPIs to analyze and improve benchmarking between storage areas) and to export statistics, graphs and reports to daily management and planning support.

Finally, an improvement function is envisaged with a proactive estimate of the number of trolleys needed in the bay based on the flow of arriving passengers and baggage by connecting the tracking system to the ADR management systems.

With more than 44.4 million passengers in 2023, ADR knows how much a trolley tracking system can positively impact operational management and the Passenger Experience; in fact, a fluid trolley supply process reduces the risk of inefficiencies and delays for the passenger to a minimum, contributing to the achievement of those high performances which are worth the title of BEST AIRPORT IN EUROPE for 7 times.

India: Cochin International Airport chooses our noise monitoring system SARA

India’s Champion of the Earth relies on Softech to monitor aircraft noise

With numerous international awards and recognitions obtained for its operational efficiency and green commitment, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has chosen to rely on our SARA environmental monitoring system to monitor noise emissions from aircraft.

Equipped with fixed and mobile control units and the most recent version of the analysis software, the SARA system will automatically and continuously collect the acoustic data coming from the monitoring terminals and then correlate them with the aeronautical activities (radar traces), and return the fingerprint to the soil acoustic impact, reports and indices required by current regulations.

The pre-installation Noise Mapping activity and post-installation professional services complete the supply.

A great result also possible thanks to the support of our local partner Structural Solutions Private Limited

The Indian Champion of the Earth

Cochin was the first airport in the world to be completely powered by solar energy: CIAL’s solar energy systems generate approximately two hundred thousand units of energy per day, while the airport’s daily energy consumption is 1.6 hundred thousand units.
For this entrepreneurial vision and pioneering commitment to demonstrating to the world that it is possible for large energy consumers such as an airport to transition to a sustainable utility model for their energy needs, the airport won the coveted award in 2018 “Champion of the Earth“, the highest environmental honor established by the United Nations.

SARA Indoor: Riyad Airports Company (RAC) signs the contract for the supply of our system

Sustainability and innovation: the project for monitoring the quality of the indoor environments at Riyad King Khalid International Airport has officially started

The management of indoor air quality (IAQ) in public spaces is assuming considerable importance.

Busy environments, such as airport terminals, are currently being considered as possible hot spots, and IAQ is a crucial element in the protection of passengers and staff, as well as a key aspect of the passenger experience at the airport.
Together with Hoshan Aviation and Defense, an important Saudi company specialized in the field of aviation and defense systems, we have developed a smart indoor monitoring system for the King Khalid international airport in Riyadh which, thanks to a widespread network of IoT-Lora sensors manufactured by us, allows you to know in real time the level of CO, CO2, H2S, noise, O2 temperature, humidity, PM 2.5 and PM10 and other pollutants in the air of terminals 2, 3, 4, 5, private 1 and 2.
The specially developed software allows real-time visualization of the data collected by the sensors on a 2D or 3D plan of the terminals; specific modules dedicated to their analysis allow the study and export of statistics, graphs and reports for specific uses. An alert system makes it possible to intervene promptly when certain thresholds considered dangerous for the health of passengers and airport operators are reached.
RAC’s requests included “the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of an accurate, state-of-the-art and highly reliable indoor air quality monitoring system”; our SARA Indoor system and design services were deemed up to par.

Advanced Air Mobility: officially signed the Memorandum between Softech and UrbanV, the Italian vertiport management company.

Softech environmental systems chosen to monitor eVTOL acoustic emissions

The Softech environmental monitoring system was chosen by UrbanV to evaluate the effective sustainability of flying taxis inside vertiports, aerodromes equipped for the take-off and landing of eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing), electric vehicles that therefore do not emit polluting substances and designed to also minimize noise emissions.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding between UrbanV and Softech is aimed at carrying out preliminary studies, acoustic measurements and the supply of the SARA system; the latter will be integrated into the IT platform developed by UrbanV for the management of vertiports.

Our thirty years of experience in the airport environmental monitoring sector will allow us to design and implement a performing system, adapted to the new needs of a mobility that did not exist before; a real challenge also for us who are particularly proud to participate in a project of this magnitude.
In Italy, the urban mobility revolution has already begun: it is estimated that in ten years, millions of Italians will have easy access to these platforms, and flying in the city will no longer be science fiction. The first flight (demonstration) took off from Fiumicino in 2022 and, already by 2024, the first air taxi from Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport to the center of Rome is expected.
It is a smart and green system, a more sustainable solution for urban transport: Ispra data reveal that the transport sector in Italy is responsible for a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions; of these, over 90% are attributable to road transport. Focusing on electric flying taxis could therefore represent a green turning point for urban transport as it is able to improve the accessibility and mobility of cities, metropolitan areas and territories, the quality of the environment, life and the safety of citizens.

Milano Linate is the best airport in Europe

Milano Linate wins the aci europe best airport awards 2023!

The city airport of the Lombard capital was awarded the Europe Best Airport Award 2023, in the category of airports between 5 and 10 million passengers.

The judges of ACI, an association that represents 500 airports in 55 European countries, positively evaluated the innovative and technological projects used to make the passenger experience increasingly dynamic, fast and safe (among these are the new security checkpoints which have the new Eds-Cb machines and FaceBoarding), but what was decisive was the recognition of the “important work done in recent years on the issue of sustainability and decarbonisation in the airport sector“.

Innovation & Sustainability

Reaching the airport via the underground, the choice of alternative fuels (Saf and hydrogen) and “Urban air mobility” are among the main objectives of the Milanese airport which is investing considerable resources and time to continue on its decarbonisation process: Milan Linate in fact, it has achieved level 4+ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation and is committed to achieving ‘Net zero emissions‘ in 2030, twenty years ahead of what was set by the European airport sector.

a sustainability project that has lasted for twenty years

Since 2003, Milan Linate has chosen to equip itself with our environmental monitoring systems to analyze the impact of air traffic both on noise pollution levels; thanks to the fixed and mobile control units mounted on sensitive areas, it guarantees an efficient service to passengers but at the same time sustainable for the communities adjacent to the infrastructure.

Milano Linate is an example of success in the airport sector and we are proud to be able to count it among our longest-standing customers.

G-SMART: Milan Malpensa chooses our system for locating GSEs

G-SMART has been recognized as an effective solution, able to meet the needs of one of the busiest international airports in Europe which alone handles around 70% of the goods in transit at Italian airports.

After 20 years of collaboration on environmental matters, Milan Malpensa international airport chooses to expand our partnership by equipping itself with G-SMART, our intelligent tracking system dedicated to GSEs, the aerodrome support equipment for ground aircraft operations.

The wide range of activities associated with aircraft ground operations leads to an equally large fleet of GSEs deployed over a large area and often in widely separated locations.

For an international airport like Milan Malpensa, which alone handles about 70% of the total goods in transit through Italian airports, knowing the position of certain ground support equipments (in this case especially the dollys) becomes essential to guarantee the necessary level of efficiency and speed of loading and unloading activities of aircrafts.

G-SMART was developed to support and combine different technologies (including: RFID, Bluetooth, LoRaWAN, GPS, ADS-B, etc.) in order to offer the best performing solution in every situation. In the case of Milan Malpensa, the most performing technology was identified after careful listening and analysis of the customer’s needs; we opted for a system based on RFID technology, capable of locating a very large number of items scattered over an equally vast area without however requiring complex installations and/or high costs: thousands of passive tags have been installed on as many dolly and more than 10 antennas in specific points identified by our technical experts following a careful study of the area.

The specifically developed software, perfectly integrated with the pre-existing system, collects and makes available to the end user the information on location and transits including direction of travel and dolly’s details. The supply also includes installation and maintenance of the system by our technical experts.

GSE tracking is an activity of significant importance at an organizational and process efficiency level. The ability to combine different technologies and to integrate into existing systems entails a significant advantage for the customer who is able to acquire a performing solution without excessive infrastructural and/or cost commitment.

G-SMART is an effective solution, able to meet the needs of one of the busiest international airports in Europe which alone manages around 70% of the goods in transit at Italian airports.

COACHELLA: the festival par excellence chooses Softech!

The Data Service chosen to monitor noise during the most anticipated music event of the year!

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is a music festival held annually since 1999 in Indio, California during two weeks of April.
In the Colorado desert, about 127 miles from Los Angeles, the show takes place on the iconic fields of the Empire Polo Club and lasts an entire weekend. The festival features performances on 5 different stages with numerous sound systems.

With over 250,000 visitors from all over the world and the festivities that continue for 3 days until late at night, the city of Indio must guarantee entertainment for music lovers and tranquility for the local population; for this reason, for the past 10 years, it has made compliance with specific noise standards a condition for the realization of the festival.

For concerts and music festivals, the solution we offer is DATA SERVICE, an environmental monitoring service supplied complete with monitoring tools and cloud-based software, ideal for keeping noise levels under control in various contexts, especially temporary ones: DS is in fact can be delivered as a SAAS for short or long term tracking campaigns. For Coachella in particular we have installed 6 monitoring terminals around the festival area, which covers more than 600 acres of land; each of the terminals is equipped with class 1 PCB-Larson Davis sound level meters, the best choice to meet the performance criteria required by the situation. The noise data was collected and analyzed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the entire month of April and the information collected was displayed in real time on online cartography by the technicians in charge, who were able to intervene immediately where necessary alerted by automatic system alerts; the reports (standard and customized) that the DS system automatically generates ensured compliance with the permitted noise standards and were used when necessary by the festival organizers.

Noise monitoring must be conducted to ensure that conditions for obtaining a special event permit issued by the city of Indio are met; it is essential given the scope of the event, that the system is performing, reliable and designed to operate in such a context. Our solution has been recognized as reliable and suitable and we are happy to have taken part in the realization of the festival par excellence.

SARA GROUND: brand new module for monitoring and managing the ground movements of aircraft

A new module integrated into the SARA platform which, by exploiting ADS-B technology, makes it possible to monitor and manage aircraft ground movements.

Airport environmental monitoring is a complex issue. It is usually thought that collecting data from aircraft in flight may be sufficient to have a clear picture of the impact that the airport has on the environment, but this is not entirely true. Monitoring the environment also means having a 360° view of airport activities, knowing the position and emissions of all moving vehicles, including aircraft in the taxiing and engine test phases.

For this reason, we wanted to develop a new module, integrated into the SARA platform, which makes it possible to integrate the classic monitoring with the ground movements of the aircraft.

The obtainable benefits concern many aspects:

TECHNICAL: the project is useful for the correct management and planning of investments on the infrastructure asset, with the main advantages connected to the APMS (Airport Pavement Management System).

The knowledge of the traffic data is in fact essential for the definition of the Forecast Degradation Models, used to predict the condition of the pavement over time and to assist the APMS manager in identifying the moment in which it is more appropriate to carry out a certain intervention (list priorities).

It also allows you to have useful data for air-side capacity simulations during the planning phases of interventions that include operational limitations and closures.

OPERATIONAL: the information relating to ground handling constitutes the basis of analysis for each optimization process. Stand occupancy data and the most frequent AAMM on each stand will be available. Statistics allow the definition of contingency strategies in case of sudden unavailability.

SAFETY: flight tracking data are essential for investigating serious or minor incidents that may occur inside and outside the airport grounds. In the processes of “root cause analysis”, for events of ordinary occurrence, it is strategic to have the traces on the ground of the AA.MM coming from the transponders.

ENVIRONMENTAL: The major source of noise is represented by the movement of aircraft, both in the taxiing on the ground and in the take-off and landing phases, as well as during the engine test.

By having data on the acoustic impact of ground activities and air tracks also in the neighboring areas outside the grounds, the noise monitoring activity is significantly enhanced and accurate.

Combined with a specific consultancy activity, SARA GROUND also makes it possible to evaluate the current situation of the airport and identify best practices (e.g.: management of taxi times) aimed at reducing the impact of aircraft ground movements on the total emissions of the infrastructure.
